Quiet Lions
Quiet Lions are a quartet based out of Brighton, known for their intricate four-part harmonies and epic sound-scape driven alt-rock.
We got in touch with the band and put a couple of questions to vocalist and guitarist Michael Williams.
What’s new with you guys?
Our debut album came out in late June of this year. It's called 'Absenteeism' and was released on Lonely Voyage Records (Polymath / Lost In The Riots) is available to stream/purchase through your usual outlets. We are super proud of it and whilst it's not new to us - it could be new to you!
What are you listening to right now?
I’m listening to all sorts at the moment and there’s been some great album this year particularly new releases from Pedro The Lion, American Football and The Twilight Sad. I also listen to a lot of meditative/ambient stuff and I recommend checking out the new Cinematic Orchestra, A Winged Victory For The Sullen and Portico Quartet albums too!
What’s the most memorable show you’ve played?
We supported Rival Schools at The Haunt and I used to love that band growing up so that was a real buzz. I also really enjoyed our home town album launch show earlier this year as it felt like a real celebration.
What’s the strangest show you’ve played?
There was a certain show that we played a few years ago where we turned up at the venue and it wasn’t our faces on the poster. I think the promoter had got us mixed up with another band - which must have been disappointing for the punters as I think the other band were better looking than us.
Where’s good for pre/post-gig grub?
I guess this totally depends on where you are. However, our Brighton food recommendations would be - Time For Kimchi, Filfil, Iydea and Bagleman.
We also recommend our pal’s new pizza business Big Slice Co. which is coming to a food market near you soon!
What do you think of the local Sussex music scene?
It’s really great and you’d be hard pushed to find so much talent in such a concentrated area anywhere else in the UK. I’ve lived in Brighton for a while now and there’s always great gigs on every night of the week.
What’s your favourite/most cherished bit of gear?
This would have to my main guitar - an original Fender USA Telecaster 77’ which I purchased for an absolute bargain on Gumtree nearly 9 years ago now. I’ve gigged with it fairly relentlessly since and it just sounds so great.
What’s your favourite album?
Blimey, not sure how to answer this with one album.. but I could ‘probably’ boil it down to three that have had a direct and sustained impact on me. Those would be:
Jeff Buckley - Grace
At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command
Oceansize - Effloresce
If you could invite three musicians, alive or dead, to a dinner party. Who would you choose, and what would you talk about?
Elliot Smith, Jimmy Page and Jeff Buckley and we could talk chord shapes and tunings however if they aren’t available I think I’d invite Luke, Oli and Rich (the rest of the band) over to talk about our plans for 2020. That seems like a more realistic and productive option.
