Yumi And The Weather

John Kennedy of ‘Radio X’ said "You could possibly pitch her somewhere between St Vincent and Prince". We think that’s quite the accolade for YATW vocalist and guitarist, Ruby Taylor.

We put our Sussex Sounds questions to the Psych-Pop songwriter.

What’s new with you?

Well at the moment I recently bought a new guitar (a Fender Sixty Six) which I am in love with at the moment!! New material is coming as I am working on my second album with a few different people, musicians and engineers, so should be an exciting eclectic mix of sounds that people will enjoy! Also I'm booking a tour in April with Bonniesongs so keep eyes peeled for live dates!!

What are you listening to right now?

Right now I'm listening to nothing as I write this, but a few songs I have liked recently have been: Brighton's Dirty White Fever, Family Fiction, Michael Baker, and London's Blue Lab Beats. Album wise I am loving Carla Dal Forno.

What’s the most memorable show you’ve played?

Probably Green Man Festival on the Chai Wallah stage as I hardly ever feel like a 'Rockstar', but that show I really felt like one. We also met Ash Walker there who played before us and we made friends which lead us to supporting them in London which was one of my favourite shows we played as felt like out of this world as was very multi sensory with visuals, smells, and sounds.

What’s the strangest show you’ve played?

Nothing too strange with Yumi unfortunately/fortunately but...In my old band, we played a festival on The Isle of Man and there was a dude dancing with his dog. That was pretty strange but funny.

Where’s good for pre/post-gig grub?

It depends near what venue, but near Green Door Store I'd say the Lebanese place opposite the Prince Albert in the Bridge, best falafel and the meat is delicious too. Take-away and sit in if there is space as quite a small little restaurant.

What do you think of the local Sussex music scene?

I think it's phenomenal and I am so proud and over the moon to be part of it.

What’s your favorite/most cherished bit of gear?

I suppose my dad lent me his 1978 USA P Bass so that was my most cherished instrument but I am giving it back to him now cause he wants to use it again. But gear wise I think my computer cause it allows be to capture my emotions when they arise to a point of needing to be unleashed.

What’s your favourite album?

Of all time? I can't answer that! I think last year was Alvvays's 2nd album. I love that band so much. Their first album was great but the production on the 2nd was tip top.

If you could invite three musicians, alive or dead, to a dinner party who would you choose, and what would you talk about?

Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Jon Bonham and we wouldn't talk, we would just jam. I would play the bass.
